Robert's Story

Robert Powell is an experienced business advisor and expert facilitator with more than four decades’ experience of advising many of Australia’s best known privately-owned businesses and high net wealth family groups.

Robert is a Specialist Accredited Adviser and former NSW Committee member of the Family Business Association (AU), he holds certificates in Family Business and Family Wealth Advising from the Family Firm Institute, a Bachelor of Economics degree (University of Sydney), is a Graduate Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and is a Fellow of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand.

He has previously been invited to participate in various Government think tanks including being a founding member of the Federal Government’s Small Business Advisory Committee, the ATO/Tax Practitioner Forum SME Working Group, and the Expert Panel to the Board of Taxation.

In recognition of his expertise and service to family business over many years, Robert was the inaugural recipient of the Family Business Association's Accredited Adviser Award for 2018/19.

From 1995 until 2022, Robert was a Private Advisory partner at Grant Thornton Australia, one of Australia’s leading professional accounting firms and was responsible for building and leading the firm’s national Family Business Consulting division. In this capacity Robert was a trusted adviser to some of Australia’s best known family enterprises with business relationships lasting up to 3 decades.

During 2022, Robert founded the specialist consultancy Family Boards Pty Limited to provide specialist best-practice governance advice to private companies and has since been engaged to advise a variety of company boards in developing director competencies, facilitate board meetings, develop strategy and risk management policies, and to create essential board processes including board charters and delegations of authority.

Robert has been the Chair of our LTT1 CEO Group since 2023.
